Our Story

Calla Lily Crepes was founded in May 2008 by Autumn & Darren Barr-Engstrom with the goal of providing more delicious, organic, locally grown food at community events. Crepes quickly became a fun, delicious “fast food” at all the popular local venues including Hot Summer Nights in Nevada City and Thursday Night Marketplace in Grass Valley. In 2004 Darren went to visit Autumn while she was living in Geneva, Switzerland. She took him to her favorite creperie in Brittany, France where all her host families and friends joined them. Creperies are the places to go for such gatherings… they are kind of like the pizzerias of France if you’ll excuse the metaphor. We would love to create such a jovial atmosphere and local creperie someday.

In April 2008, when we moved back to California from the east coast and found ourselves between jobs, we decided it was a great opportunity to try something completely different. Combining our love for crepes, passion for good food, and entrepreneurial spirit, we launched Calla Lily Crepes! The rave reviews people gave us event after event kept us going even when our feet were sore.

In May 2009 Darren took over the running of the crepe business and serving delicious organic crepes made fresh and to order. You’ll likely see Darren and his team of crepe spinning artists around at local events and farmers markets in Grass Valley and Nevada City, California.
